What’s the Difference Between Holistic Health, Functional Medicine and Integrative Medicine ?
When it comes to taking charge of your health, you’ve probably heard the terms functional, integrative, and holistic—but what do they actually mean, and how are they different? While they all share a focus on treating the whole person rather than just symptoms, each approach has its own unique lens. Here’s a simple breakdown:
Holistic Health
Holistic health means looking at the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. It focuses on the idea that everything in your life is connected, and that true healing happens when we address physical health alongside mental, emotional, and even spiritual well-being. A holistic approach often blends natural therapies like nutrition, movement, mindfulness, and lifestyle changes to support balance and harmony in all areas of life.
Functional Medicine
Functional medicine takes things a step further by digging into the root causes of symptoms. It’s a science-based, personalized approach that looks at how systems in the body are interconnected—like how gut health might affect mood or how blood sugar impacts hormones. Functional medicine often uses advanced lab testing to uncover imbalances and creates a tailored plan that may include food, lifestyle, targeted nutrients, and more. It’s about understanding why things are out of balance, and then creating a clear path toward healing.
Integrative Medicine
Integrative medicine brings together the best of both worlds—combining conventional Western medicine with evidence-based complementary therapies. An integrative provider might recommend lab testing and medications when needed, while also incorporating tools like acupuncture, supplements, yoga, or stress reduction techniques. The goal is to integrate different healing modalities to support the whole person, not just treat disease.

Marisa is the founder of Vita Sana Integrative Health, where she partners with patients to uncover the root causes of their health concerns and create personalized plans that support lasting healing. She believes in meeting each patient where they are, providing compassionate guidance and education to help them take an active role in their health journey.
Marisa holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Eastern Michigan University and holds a certification in functional medicine (FMACP) from Functional Medicine Academy. She brings 14 years of nursing experience, including emergency care, peri-operative nursing, and care management, where she worked closely with individuals managing chronic health conditions.
Her passion for functional medicine began three years ago through her own personal health journey, when she made the decision to take ownership of her well-being and search for answers beyond traditional approaches. That experience deepened her commitment to helping others who are ready to do the same—addressing not just symptoms, but the underlying imbalances that impact health and quality of life.
At Vita Sana Integrative Health, Marisa blends clinical knowledge with a caring, individualized approach, empowering patients to regain balance and feel their best.
